UK Skilled Worker Visa

To qualify for a Skilled Worker visa under the UK’s immigration rules, you must meet several key requirements:

Certificate of Sponsorship:
You must have a valid Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) from an approved UK employer who holds a Sponsor Licence.

Skill Level:
Your job must be on the list of eligible occupations, typically requiring skill levels equivalent to RQF Level 3 or higher (A-level or equivalent).

Salary Threshold:
You must be paid a minimum salary that meets one of the following criteria:

• £41,700 per annum (the general salary threshold, effective from 22 July 2025), or

• The ‘going rate’ for your specific occupation, whichever is higher, or

• At least £21.38 per hour (as of July 2025).

Certain exceptions apply:

• Lower salary rates may be available for skilled worker visa applicants in specific circumstances, such as STEM PhD holders or “New Entrants” (for example, recent graduates or younger applicants).

• Transitional arrangements: Individuals who were granted a Skilled Worker visa before 4 April 2024 may continue to qualify under a lower threshold of £31,300 when extending their visa, provided they meet the relevant conditions.

English Language Proficiency:
You must demonstrate English language ability at CEFR level B1 (intermediate) in reading, writing, speaking, and listening.

Maintenance Funds:
Unless your sponsor certifies your maintenance, you must have at least £1,270 in your bank account for 28 consecutive days prior to your skilled worker application.

The application process for a Skilled Worker visa involves several key steps:

1. Secure a Job Offer: You must first receive an eligible job offer from a UK employer who holds a valid Sponsor Licence.
2. Receive a Certificate of Sponsorship: Your employer will issue you a Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) number, which you’ll need for your application.
3. Prepare Documentation: Gather all required documents, including:
   • A valid passport or travel document
   • Previous passports showing travel history
   • Evidence of English language proficiency
   • Proof of maintenance funds (if required)
   • Tuberculosis test results (if from a designated country)
   • Criminal record certificate (if working in healthcare, education or social care)
4. Submit Your Application: Apply online and pay the required fees, including the visa application fee and Immigration Health Surcharge.
5. Biometric Appointment: Attend an appointment at a visa application centre to provide your fingerprints and photograph.
6. Receive Decision: Wait for the Home Office to process your application, which typically takes 3-8 weeks for standard service, or as little as 5 working days with priority services.

You can apply for your Skilled Worker visa up to 3 months before your intended employment start date in the UK as stated on your Certificate of Sponsorship.

The costs associated with a Skilled Worker visa include:

• Application Fee: £625 to £1,423 per person (depending on your circumstances and job)

• Immigration Health Surcharge: £1,035 per year per person

• Certificate of Sponsorship: £535 (typically paid by your employer)
