Expert Guidance for Working in Britain

Are you looking to work in the United Kingdom?

The Skilled Worker visa allows qualified professionals to live and work in the UK for up to 5 years with a pathway to permanent settlement. At Intime Immigration Solicitors, we’re proud to maintain an exceptional success rate for Skilled Worker visa applications, making us the trusted choice for professionals seeking to advance their careers in the UK.

Our experienced immigration solicitors provide personalised guidance throughout your Skilled Worker visa application process. Unlike many firms, you’ll work directly with a qualified solicitor from your very first consultation through to successful completion, ensuring the highest level of expertise and care for your case.

What is the UK Skilled Worker Visa?

The UK Skilled Worker visa replaced the Tier 2 (General) visa category on 1 December 2020. This long-term work permit allows you to live and work in the United Kingdom for up to 5 years, with the length of time determined by your Certificate of Sponsorship.

It’s important to note that this visa is only valid while you continue to work in the same role with your sponsoring employer. If you wish to change jobs or employers, you must apply for a new Skilled Worker visa.

After 5 years of continuous residence, you become eligible to apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR), granting you permanent settlement rights in the UK.

Years of Experience and Expertise

To qualify for a Skilled Worker visa, you must meet several key requirements:

  • Certificate of Sponsorship: You must have a valid Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) from an approved UK employer who holds a Sponsor Licence.
  • Skill Level: Your job must be on the list of eligible occupations, typically requiring skill levels equivalent to RQF Level 3 or higher (A-level or equivalent).
  • Salary Threshold: You must be paid a minimum salary of either:
    • £38,700  per annum, or
    • The ‘going rate’ for your specific occupation, whichever is higher, or
    • At least £19.84 per hour (as of April 2024)
  • English Language Proficiency: You must demonstrate English language ability at CEFR level B1 (intermediate) in reading, writing, speaking and listening.
  • Maintenance Funds: Unless your sponsor is certifying maintenance, you must have at least £1,270 in your bank account for 28 consecutive days prior to application.

Our immigration experts can assess your eligibility for the Skilled Worker visa and advise on the best approach for your unique circumstances.

The application process for a Skilled Worker visa involves several key steps:

  1. Secure a Job Offer: You must first receive an eligible job offer from a UK employer who holds a valid Sponsor Licence.
  2. Receive a Certificate of Sponsorship: Your employer will issue you a Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) number, which you’ll need for your application.
  3. Prepare Documentation: Gather all required documents, including:
    • A valid passport or travel document
    • Previous passports showing travel history
    • Evidence of English language proficiency
    • Proof of maintenance funds (if required)
    • Tuberculosis test results (if from a designated country)
    • Criminal record certificate (if working in healthcare, education or social care)
  4. Submit Your Application: Apply online and pay the required fees, including the visa application fee and Immigration Health Surcharge.
  5. Biometric Appointment: Attend an appointment at a visa application centre to provide your fingerprints and photograph.
  6. Receive Decision: Wait for the Home Office to process your application, which typically takes 3-8 weeks for standard service, or as little as 5 working days with priority services.

You can apply for your Skilled Worker visa up to 3 months before your intended employment start date in the UK as stated on your Certificate of Sponsorship.

The costs associated with a Skilled Worker visa include:

  • Application Fee: £625 to £1,423 per person (depending on your circumstances and job)
  • Immigration Health Surcharge: £1,035 per year per person
  • Certificate of Sponsorship: £199 (typically paid by your employer)
  • Priority Service: Additional £500 (optional) for faster processing

These fees are subject to change, and our solicitors will provide you with the most up-to-date information during your consultation.
