British Nationality Chester Manchester UK

Are you ready to take the final step in your UK immigration journey?

Applying for British citizenship (naturalisation) is the ultimate goal for many foreign nationals living in the UK. British citizenship grants you the right to live permanently in the UK, vote in elections, access all public services, and obtain a British passport for visa-free travel.

At Intime Immigration Solicitors, we’re proud to maintain a 100% success rate for British citizenship applications, making us the trusted choice for individuals seeking to secure their permanent future in the UK.

Our experienced British citizenship solicitors provide personalised guidance throughout your naturalisation application process. Unlike many firms, you’ll work directly with a qualified solicitor from your very first consultation through to successful completion, ensuring the highest level of expertise and care for your case.

What is British Citizenship?

British citizenship (also known as naturalisation) is the process by which foreign nationals who have lived in the UK for a qualifying period can become full British citizens. Once you hold British citizenship, you have the same rights and responsibilities as any other British citizen.

British citizenship is your permanent status in the UK – it cannot be taken away in most circumstances, and it provides you with the security of knowing you can always live and work in the UK without immigration restrictions.

British Citizenship Requirements 2025

To successfully apply for British citizenship, you must meet several stringent eligibility criteria:

Standard Route (5-Year Route):

  • You must have lived in the UK for at least 5 years before your application date
  • You must not have spent more than 450 days outside the UK in the last 5 years
  • You must not have spent more than 90 days outside the UK in the last 12 months
  • You must have been physically present in the UK exactly 5 years before the Home Office receives your application

Marriage Route (3-Year Route):

  • You must be married to or in a civil partnership with a British citizen
  • You must have lived in the UK for at least 3 years before your application date
  • You must not have spent more than 270 days outside the UK in the last 3 years
  • You must not have spent more than 90 days outside the UK in the last 12 months

You must hold one of the following statuses for at least 12 months before applying (unless married to a British citizen):

  • Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR)
  • EU Settled Status
  • Indefinite Leave to Enter the UK

If you’re married to a British citizen, you can apply for British citizenship as soon as you receive settled status – you don’t need to wait 12 months.

All applicants over 10 years of age must demonstrate “good character.” The Home Office will assess:

  • Your criminal record (including spent convictions)
  • Whether you’ve complied with UK immigration laws
  • Your financial conduct (including bankruptcy or serious debt)
  • Any behaviour that conflicts with generally accepted standards of behaviour

Our British citizenship solicitors can help you understand how the good character requirement applies to your specific circumstances and advise on any potential issues.

Unless exempt, you must demonstrate English language proficiency at a minimum of CEFR level B1. This can be satisfied by:

  • Passing an approved Secure English Language Test (SELT) at B1, B2, C1, or C2 level
  • Having a degree taught or researched in English
  • Being a national of a majority English-speaking country

The English language test costs approximately £150 and is valid for 2 years.

You must pass the Life in the UK Test, which demonstrates your knowledge of British history, culture, traditions, and the legal system. The test:

  • Consists of 24 multiple-choice questions
  • Must be completed within 45 minutes
  • Requires a pass rate of 75% (18 out of 24 questions correct)
  • Costs £50 per attempt
  • Can be retaken if failed (with additional £50 fee each time)

You must prepare using the official handbook “Life in the United Kingdom: A Guide for New Residents.”

How to Apply for British Citizenship

Applying for British citizenship involves several critical steps:

  1. Check Your Eligibility: Ensure you meet all the requirements, particularly residency, immigration status, and good character criteria.
  2. Complete Required Tests: Pass the Life in the UK Test and meet the English language requirement (if not exempt).
  3. Gather Required Documents: Collect comprehensive evidence of your residency, immigration status, identity, and character references.
  4. Complete the Online Application: Submit Form AN (Application for Naturalisation) online via the UK government website.
  5. Pay the Application Fee: The fee for British citizenship in 2025 is £1,735 (including the £130 citizenship ceremony fee).
  6. Provide Biometric Information: Attend an appointment to provide your fingerprints and photograph (no additional fee).
  7. Wait for a Decision: Processing times are typically around 6 months, though this can vary.
  8. Attend Citizenship Ceremony: If approved, you must attend a citizenship ceremony to complete the process and receive your Certificate of Naturalisation.

At Intime Immigration, we provide comprehensive support at every stage of this process. Our British citizenship solicitors carefully review your application to ensure all requirements are met, significantly reducing the risk of refusal.

  • Registration (adults): £1,446
  • Registration (children): £1,214

British Citizenship for Children

Children can acquire British citizenship through registration rather than naturalisation. The process is generally simpler:

  • Children don’t need to pass the Life in the UK Test or English language requirements
  • The fee is £1,214 for child registration

Our solicitors can advise on the best route for your child’s British citizenship application.

The Citizenship Ceremony

Upon approval of your British citizenship application, you’ll receive an invitation to attend a citizenship ceremony. During the ceremony, you will:

  • Take an Oath of Allegiance to the Crown
  • Make a Pledge of Loyalty to the United Kingdom
  • Receive your Certificate of Naturalisation
  • Officially become a British citizen

The ceremony fee of £130 is included in your application fee. You are not a British citizen until you attend this ceremony.
